English Explanation
Lord Krishna gives the example of the sun to explain the nature of the soul.
The sun illuminates the entire world with its light. Because of sunlight, we are able to see different objects and recognize the world around us. Similarly, the soul, the knower of the body, gives consciousness to the entire body.
The body is called “Kshetra,” or the field, while the soul is called “Kshetrajna,” the knower of the field. The physical body by itself is inert. It becomes conscious and capable of seeing, hearing, thinking and acting because of the presence of the soul.
Just as the sun illuminates the world without becoming the objects that it illuminates, the soul remains distinct from the body while giving it consciousness.
Therefore, Lord Krishna teaches that our true identity is not merely the physical body. The soul is the conscious principle within the body. Understanding this distinction between the body and the soul is an important part of spiritual knowledge.
